Klima-Bündnis Lëtzebuerg

What lasts a long time eventually turns out well! After the municipality of Monnerich had already joined the European Climate Pact some time ago, nails were finally hammered in for Luxembourg at the end of 2018.

In fact, the Monnerich municipal council unanimously decided at its meeting on December 14, 2018, to also join the Klima-Bündnis Lëtzebuerg*. With this, 40 Luxembourg municipalities—clearly more than a third of all municipalities in the country—are now members of Klima-Bündnis Lëtzebuerg. Incidentally, in these municipalities, together, live more than two-thirds of all residents of our country!

For more than 25 years, the member municipalities of the Klima-Bündnis have been working with their indigenous partners in the rainforests for the global climate. With 1,700 members from 26 European countries, the Klima-Bündnis is the world's largest urban network dedicated to climate protection and the only one that sets concrete goals: Each Klima-Bündnis municipality has committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by ten percent every five years. Since our lifestyle directly affects particularly endangered peoples and places on Earth, the Klima-Bündnis links local action with global responsibility. In Luxembourg, 40 municipalities are members of Klima-Bündnis Lëtzebuerg (as of the end of 2018), coordinated by the two NGOs ASTM and Mouvement Ecologique.

Internationales Klima-Bündnis

The Climate Alliance

The municipality of Monnerich has been a member of the Climate Alliance since 2014. The Climate Alliance is a European network of 1700 towns and municipalities that have committed to protecting the climate and tropical rainforests. In 26 European countries, member municipalities are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions locally.

Concrete Goals

Each town and municipality in the Climate Alliance has voluntarily committed to achieving the following goals:

Reduction of CO2 emissions by 10% every 5 years and halving per capita emissions by at the latest 2030 (base year 1990)

Protection of tropical rainforests through, for example, abstaining from tropical timber use and supporting projects and initiatives of indigenous partners. Whether in the Amazon Basin, in sub-Saharan Africa, or in subtropical Asia: Indigenous peoples around the world are among the most affected by climate change, despite contributing very little to it. Their livelihoods, especially the rainforest, are damaged and destroyed by our demand for natural resources such as wood, precious metals, or crude oil, soy feed, or biofuels from palm oil, thereby further accelerating climate change.

Annual Conference

The annual International Annual Conference and Members' Assembly is the forum for members to discuss central topics of the association's work, focus areas, and positions. The annual development of the association, focus areas, as well as the annual report and financial planning are documented in the annual report.

Alliance internationale pour le climat

"Think globally, act locally"

The Climate Alliance is a European network of cities and municipalities committed to protecting the climate and tropical forests. Currently, in seventeen European countries, the member municipalities work locally to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Their partners within this alliance are indigenous peoples and non-governmental organizations in tropical forest areas.

By joining the Climate Alliance, the Municipal Administration of Mondercange commits to the following objectives:

  • Reduction of 10% of CO2 emissions at the municipal level every 5 years;
  • Reduction by half of greenhouse gas emissions per inhabitant, at the latest by 2030 (base year 1990);
  • Protection of tropical forests and the rights of their inhabitants;
  • Support for projects and initiatives of partner organizations in developing countries.
